Arthur Basile studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin. G.F. Ghedini was one of his teachers there. He graduated in 1933 as an oboist and worked for the EIAR Symphony Orchestra in Turin. In 1942 he married Elisabetta Sangermano and they had a son, Riccardo.

On 16 October 1943 he debuted as a conductor at the Teatro Carignano in Turin. In 1944 he was asked to replace Gino Marinuzzi for a performance at the Teatro del Popolo in Turin. This made his name and he worked with many famous singers afterwards. In November 1949 he conducted the RAI orchestra that accompanied Maria Callas when she made recordings in Turin. He also worked with Renata Tebaldi and his friendship with her opened international doors for him. He performed in Naples, New York, Bilbao, Bologna, Rome and many other cities.

At the height of his careeer in 1968 he died in a car crash together with Marisa Galli, a sister of the soprano Gianna Galli.
