Florence Elizabeth Gaskell was the third daughter of the writer Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) and her husband William Gaskell (1805-1884), die de predikant was van Cross Street Chapel in Manchester. She was called Flossy. She was educated Heathfield in Knutsford by the daughters of Rev. Henry Green. In 1862 she went to stay with Judge Charles John Crompton in London, and she became engaged to his son Charles, who was ten years her senior. She was the first of the sisters to marry. They were married by her father at Brooke Street Chapel in 1863. In 1865 they were present when Elizabeth Gaskell died of heart failure.

She lived with her husband in London. They had no children. After eighteen years of marriage, she went to bed with a headache and took a dose of Chloral hydrate. She never woke up. She might have taken an accidental overdose, but nothing pointed at suicide. She was buried in her the grave of her husband's family at St Mary's Churchyard in Willesden.
