Donato Barcaglia was the son of a government employee. He attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where Abbondio Sangiorgio was his sculpture teacher. In the 1860s he already worked as portrait painter and in the 1870s he concentrated on sculpture. His first sculpture "Il vendemmiatore" ("The Harvester") was an instant success and it was placed in the Palazzo Reale in Milan. He was famous by the time he was 25 years old and rich before he was 30. He started producing replicas of his wrks that he sold internationally. He exhibited at the Universal Exhibitions in Vienna (1873) and Philadelphia (1876). He executed many public commissions and als created funerary monuments for the Cimitero Monumentale in Milan and the cemetery of Gravedona. He died in Rome in 1930. |
