After finishing his studies, Alessandro Bonsanti worked as a bank employee in Milan. He also wrote for the magazine "La Fiera Literaria". After his return to Florence he worked for the magazine "Solaria" as a contributor and as an editor.

In 1941 he became the director of the Gabinetto scientifìco-letterario Vieusseux. For fourty years he promoted numerous cutural activities. He published "Dialoghi e altre prose" in (1940) and "Introduzione al gran viaggio" in 1944. From 1945 to 1947 he directed the weekly "Il Mondo".

In his later years he was also politically active. He supported Spadolini's Partito Repubblicano. In 1983 he was elected mayor of Florence, but he died in February 1984.
