Karl Brohan was trained as a merchant. He was the owner of a dental wholesale business. In the early 1960s he started collecting Art Deco and Art Nouveau porcelain and metalwork. In 1965 he gave up his business and he moved to Berlin with his wife. His collection grew rapidly. He specifically collected works by Henry van de Velde and Josef Hoffmann. In 1973 the collection was opened for the public in a villa in Dahlem, Berlin. In 1981 he donated most of his collections to Berlin and they were exhibited since 1983 in a former barrack opposite the Charlottenburg Palace. This is now the Bröhan Museum. Bröhan directed the museum himself until his death. After his death his wife Margrit took over the direction for three years. Related persons owned work by Hoffmann, Josef |
