Wilhelm Nils Fresenius was the son of Ludwig Fresenius (1886-1936). He studied chemics and was promoted in 1939 at Frankfurt University. In 1949 he took over the management of the laboratory that was founded by his grandfather Carl Remigius Fresenius. Under his management it became the market leader for food analysis. He was also active in the Evangelical chuch and for many years he was the chairman of the Bergkirchengemeinde in Wiesbaden.
