George Frederick worked for several orchestras as violinist. In 1819 he became a member of the Royal Private Band. He married the pianist Lucy Anderson in 1820. He became the Treasurer of the Royal Philharmonic Society, and he held this post until his death in 1876. In 1841 he was appointed professor of music.

In 1848 Queen Victoria engaged him as Master of the Queen's music as the successor of Franz Cramer. At that time, this post was usually for life, but he left it for unknown reasons in 1870. He died in 1876 in London.
