Adolf Echtler was born in Gdansk as the son of the portrait painter and photographer Eduard Echtler. He lived in Riga and Sankt Petersburg and recieeed his first painting lessons from his father. In 1860 he moved to Venice for health reasons. There he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He continued his studies in Vienna and in Munich, where Wilhelm von Diez was his teacher.

From 1869 his paintings were exhibited in Munich, Berlin and other cities. He joined the Künstlerhaus in Vienna in 1870. In 1876 he married in Aachen and from 1877 to 1886 he lived in Paris where he exhibited at the Salon. His son Adolf was born in 1878 and became a painter as well. After the death of his wife in 1886 he moved with his son to Munich. He received the title of professor and became a honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich.
