Johannna von Destouches was the daughter of Ernst von Destouches (1843-1916), the founder of the Stadtmuseum in Munich. She became a teacher of modern languages and was also educated to teach singing and piano. She studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule under Olga Weiss and later Else Gürleth-Hey was her teacher. In 1897 she exhibited her watercolours in the Kunstverein in Munich and exhibitions in many other cities followed.

In 1938, 1940, 1941 and 1943 she participated in the Großen Deutschen Kunstausstellungen (Great German Art Exhibitions) in Munich. High ranking nazi officials liked her work and Hitler, Goebbels, Bormann and Adolf Wagner all bought one of her paintings. In 1950 her work was exhibited once more in München. She died in that city in 1956.
