Joseph Maria Beckert was the son of the paintet Paul Beckert. He was taught by his father and from 1903 he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin. In 1904 switched to the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich, where Max Dasio was his teacher. From 1908 he studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe and from 1909 to 1914 at the Academy in Munich under Karl von Marr.

From 1915 to 1917 he served in the army. In 1921 he became a Dominican monk and he lived in Cologn and Düssledorf. In 1927 he left the Dominicans and afterwards he worked in Munich. He became a member of the artists' association "Der Bund" and he exhibited at the Glastpalast in Munich.
