Cassandra Leigh was the third child of the rector of Harpsden in Oxfordshire, Thomas Leigh. Her mother was Jane, born Walker. Her family descended from a Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Leigh (1498-1571).

Cassandra married the reverend George Austen on 26 April 1764 at St. Swithin's Church in Bath. She wore a red riding habit during the wedding and no members of Austen's family were present during the wedding. They had eight children and their seventh child was the famous writer Jane Austen. George Austen retired to Bath with his family. After his death she returned to Hampshire and lived at Chawton. She died in 827 in Chawton and she was buried there.
