Diamantina di Roma was born on the Ionian Islands, at that time a British protectorate. Her family descended from Venetians who had settled on the islands. She was the daughter of Count Giorgio-Candiano Roma, the president of the Senate of the Ionian Islands from 1850 to 1856), and his wife Orsola, born di Balsamo. On 28 April 1856 she married the political secretary Sir George Bowen in Corfu. Their first child died soon after his birth and their second child Nina was born in 1858. After they moved to Brisbane they had three further children and their last daughter was born in Auckland in 1869. In Brisbane she was a patron of the group who founded the Lady Bowen Lying-In Hospital. She moved around the world with her husband for his work until they settled in London in 1883 with their two unmarried daughters.
