Giovanni Ciniselli studied at the Brera Academy in Milan, where he studied with the painters Francesco Hayez, Luigi Sabatelli and Giuseppe and with the sculptors Antonio Galli and Antonio Labus. He also studied in Rome with Pietro Magni and Orazio Andreoni.

In 1856 he settled in Rome and there he specialised in portraits and mythological subjects. In 1869 he set up his own studio and his reputation became international. He exhibited in European countries and in Australia. Several copies of his "Reading Girl" were produced and his work "Ruth" (c.1880) is at the Botanical Gardens in Glasgow.
