Milena Barilli was the daughter of the composer Bruno Barilli. Her mother Danica Pavlovic was Serbian. She studied at the Royal School of Arts in Belgrade (1922-1926) and in Munich (1926-1928).

She left Serbia in the early 1930s and lived in Spain, Rome, Paris and London. She created portraits and depicted biblical stories. After 1939 she lived in New York City, where she died in 1945 after a horse riding accident. Her ashes were transferred to Rome in 1949 and buried in her father's grave.
