Alfred Noack was born in Dresden as the son of a doctor. He studied xylography in that city under Hugo Bürkner at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1856 he went to Rome where he stayed for four years and was a member of the Deutschen Kunstverein.

In 1860 he moved to Genoa where opened a photo studio. During the 1860s his pictures of Genoa and the Ligurian landscape were very popular with tourists.

After his death Carlo Paginini (1858-1930) inherited his studio and his archives. In 1926 it the collection was sold by Maria Paganini to the city of Genova.
