Theodor Althoff started in Dülmen, Westfalen by taking over a shop from his mother. In 1904 he opened the largest department store of Westfalen in Dortmund, the Kaufhaus Althoff. It had a sales area of 5,000 square meters. By 1910 he owned eleven stores and in 1912 a department store of 10,000 square meters in Essen followed. The expansion ended abruptly with the outbreak of the First World War. Goods became scarce and people had little money to spend. As a consequence he merged his company merged with Rudolph Karstadt AG in 1920. Althoff became chairman of the supervisory board. He died in 1932 in Münster. |
