Konstanze Vernon was the daughter of the musicologist Friedrich Herzfeld (1897-1967) and his wife the singer Theresia Eckstein. When she was six years old she started her ballet lessons with Tatjana Gsovsky. At the age of fourteen she was a member of the Ballet in Berlin and when she was seventeen she was its youngest solo performer. In 1963 she was contracted by the State Opera in Munich, where she was prima ballerina from 1963 to 1981. Among her dance partners were Winfried Krisch (1936-1995) and Heinz Bosl (1946-1975). After Bosl's early dead she founded the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung in 1978. In 1990 she became the first director of the new Bavarian State Ballet (until 1998).
