Josef Metternich was educated at the Max-Ernst-Gymnasium Brühl until 1934. In 1935 he started hs musical career as a member of the choir at the Bonner Stadttheater. He fell ill from tuberculosis but he recovered and in 1939 he was engaged at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin. Initially he received small parts, but after Michael Bohnen took over after the Second World War he had important parts and he performed at the State Opera Unter den Linden as well.

For four years he sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. After that he was employed at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich until he retired in 1971. He worked as a singing teacher for many years and also gave master classes at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. Among his many pupils were Dorothea Christ and Stella Kleindienst. Metternich was married to the opera singer Liselotte Losch. He died in 2005 in Feldafing.
