Alex de Vries was the son of the diamond cutter Joseph David de Vries from Amsterdam. Shortly after his birth the family moved back to Antwerp. He was educated at the Royal Flemish Conservatory, where Edward Verheyden (1878-1959) was one of his teachers. He won several prizes and a career as a concert pianist followed. He was also active as a composer. He married the pianist Denise Tolkowsky (1918-1991). From 1946 to 1958 he was teacher of the piano class at the Conservatory in Ghent. From 1958 he worked for the Conservatory in Antwerp. In 1964 he ended his life, possibly because one of his pupils ranked low at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 1965 Denise established the Alex de Vries Fund. Family Wife: Tolkowsky, Denise (-1964) |
