John Benjamin Tolkien was a piano maker, teacher and tuner. He was the son of George William Tolkien (1784-1840) and partly of German descent. His first wife was Jane Holmwood, wth whom he had four children. In 1856 he married Mary Jane Stow (1833-1915). Their son Arthur Reuel Tolkien was born in 1857 and he was the father of the famous author J.R.R. Tolkien.

In 1877 he went bankrupt. Arthur's death in 1896 was a heavy blow to him and he died six months later himself.
