Maria Kossak was born into a family of artists. Her grandfather Juliusz Kossak and her father Wojciech Kossak were both history painters and her sister Magdalena Samozwaniec became a popular author.

During her youth she painted and wrote as well. She married Wladyslaw Bzowski in 1915, but that marriage was annuled. Her second husband was Jan Pawlikowski. After she married him in 1919 her poetry prevailed. Their marriage was passionate but it didn't last either and they divorced in 1929.

After her divorce she participated in the Skamander group of poets from Warshaw. She wrote twelve volumes of poetry between the First and the Second World War. Between 1924 and 1939 she produced fifteen plays as well. In 1931 Stefan Jasnorzewski became her third husband. With him she left for England in 1939. There she was diagnosed with cancer and her husband cared for her until her death in 1945 in Manchester. Her husband lived until 1970.
