Lorenzo Pignotti studied medicin in Pisa and graduated in 1764. After practising his profession for several years he was appointed professor of physics in Florence in 1769. In 1775 he obtained the same position in Pisa. Apart from poetry he wrote a history of Tuscany in nine volumes. He was best known for his fables, sometimes originals and sometimes beased on classic stories. In 1801 he became royal historian and in 1808 he was appointed rector magnificus of the University of Pisa. He died in 1812 in Pisa.
