Herbert Levin lost his hearing when he was fourteen years old due to scarlet fever. He studied all the same at the universities of Leipzig, Göttingen and Giessen. In 1916 he received his doctorate in Giessen. In 1917 he moved to Heidelberg, where he worked as a bank clerk and wrote on local history. In 1919 he married the actress Irma von Drygalski who became an author after they married. In 1926 e changed his last name to Derwein. He worked part-time for the Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg and from 1941 to 1958 he was Heidelberg's city archivist. After Irma's death in 1953 he married Gertrud Bergmann in 1958.
