Daniel Godfrey came from a family of bandmasters. His father was Dan Godfrey (1831-1903), the bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards.

In 1893 he founded the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra and he was its conductor for 41 years until 1934. Between 1914 and 1930 he made several records with the orchestra for HMV. In 1922 he was knighted for his services to music.
