Josef Anton Gegenbauer studied in Munich unde Robert von Langer. He lived in Munich from 1815 to 1823. In 1823 he went to Rome, where he stayed until 1826, studying the works of Raphael. He made himself a name as a frescoe painter and after he returned to Württemberg he was appointed Court Painter by the king. He decorated the Royal Villa of Rosenstein.

In 1829 he went to Rome again to work on frescoes. In Stuttgart he decorated the Royal Palace between 1836 and 1854 with sixteen frescoes. This work was largely destroyed during the Second World War. He died in 1876 in Rome and was buried there.
