Eberhard von Zeppelin was the son Friedrich Jérôme Wilhelm Karl Count von Zeppelin (1807-1886), who was a court marshal to the Prince of Hohenzollern and a cotton manufacturer. His mother was Amélie Françoise Pauline, born Macaire d'Hogguèr (1816-1852). The famous airship designer Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917) was his brother. Eberhard von Zeppelin served in the army of Württemberg, and he represented that kingdom as a diplomat in Italy and Austria. After his diplomatic career he returned to the Bodensee. He bought the Kunzenhof estate in Kreuzlingen, Thurgau in 1869. In 1872 he joined the family bank Macaire & Co. He and his family became important financiers of the industrialization in the Lake Constance Regio. Through his mother, the family owned the indigo dye works on the Dominican Island in Lake Constance. He converted it into the Insel-Hotel that opened in 1875. He managed the hotel until 1902. In 1886 he initiated a project for the mapping and scientific exploration of Lake Constance in 1886 and contributed to the publication of the results.
