Edmund Wallace Elmslie was the son of James Elmslie (1779-1865) and Caroline Anne Foster (1793-1861). The wealth in his family was derived from his grandfather John Elmslie, who had invested in sugar cane plantations in Jamaica. He lived in Malvern and in London and he married Theodora Price (1839-1922) on 17 September 1862.

In Malvern he designed Great Malvern Railway Station around 1862. He also designed the bridge over the railway and the Imperial Hotel opposite the station, now housing St James Public School for girls. Around 1867 he designed the gothic mansion St Mungho's, later known as The Grove. This became his family home, but later he sold it. He died in Great Malvern in 1889.
