Paul Victor Mendelssohn Benecke was born in London as the son of Charles Viktor Benecke (1831-1908), who was a manufacturer in London, and his wife Marie Pauline Helene Benecke-Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1830-1897). His mother was a daughter of the famous composer and conductor Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. He posessed a collection of first edition manuscripts of Mendelssohn's works. He had a sister named Margaret. Benecke entered Magdalen College in Oxford on a demyship in 1886. He studied classics, literae Humanoires and theoloy and won several prizes. In 1894 he became a Fellow of Magdalen and this lasted until his death. During his career he published little but he taught widely. All the time he lived in the New Buildings of Magdalen. From 1902 to 1920 he was Home Bursar of Magdalen, managing day-to day operations.He helde several other positions. He died in 1944 in Oxford.
