Sientje van Houten was the younger sister of the future Dutch Secretary Minister of the Interior. Her father was the owner of a large sawmill. In 1856 she married the stockbroker and future professional painter Hendrik Mesdag. After her father died she received an inheritance and she supported her husband in his decision to fully concentrate on his painting. After their only child died in 1871 she did the same thing herself. She painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits. In 1881 she participated in the painting of the Panorama Mesdag. She exhibited in several countries and in 1884 she recieved a gold medal at an exhibition in Amsterdam. She was member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague and there she was hnored with an exhibition when she turned seventy in 1904. She died in 1909 in The Hague.
