Giuseppe Amato was born Giuseppe Vasaturo, the son of Giuseppe Vasaturo senior and Enrichetta Maria Amato. He started producing films in Naples in the 1920s. He lived in the USA for a while and after his return to Italy he worked as an actor, a screenwriter and a director. As a director he wasn't able to distinguish himself, but as a producer he supported the careers of Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo in the 1930s and he produced Vittorio de Sica's first movie "Rose scarlatte" in 1940. He also produced movies by Alessandro Blasetti. After the Second World War he produced the first Don Camillo film and in 1960 he was the producer of Fellini's "La dolce vita".
