Charlotte Bara was the daughter of the Jewish sil merchant Paul Bachrach from Germany. She took dancing lessons with a pupil of Isadora Duncan, from Alexander Sacharoff and from prince Raden Mas Jodjana. After the First World War her family was forced to leave Belgium and she lived the artists colony Worpswede for a while.

The family settled in Castello San Materno in Ascona that was renovated by the architect Paul Rudolf Henning. In 1927 she married the psychiatrist Carl Rütters. In 1928 she converted to the roman catholic faith. The architect Carl Weidemeyer built the Teatro San Materno for her and it was completed in 1929. After the Second World War she obtained Swiss citizenship. Until the 1950s she danced and taught in Ascona. She died in Locarno in 1986.
