Giovanni Barrella was the son of mayor in the Naepolitan army. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti and debuted in comedies in dialect before he acted in Italian productions at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. In 1912 he debuted in the silent film. Together with Paolo Bonecchio he started his own theatrical company in 1931. In 1934 he appeared in his first sound film and he played in films until 1951. He was also active as a writer and as a painter.
