Ese Schiff started her first engagement at the Residenztheater in Cologne in 1902. In 1903 she worked at the Intimes Theater in Nuremberg and from 1904 at the Lessingtheater in Berlin. In 1908 she married the actor Albert Bassermann and they often appeared on the stage together. Their daughter Carmen was mentally handicapped. She worked at the Reinhardt-Bühnen in Berlin from 1908 to 1914 and again from 1924 to 1927. She was Jewish and in 1934 she was banned from appearing in Leipzig by the Reichstheaterkammer. In the same year she moved to Austria with her husband. In 1939 they went to the USA, where she had a few small roles in movies. After 1946 she returned to the stage in Europe with her husband. After Basserman's death in 1952 she appeared at the Stadttheater in Göttingen for two years from 1953.
