Friedrich Gonne was the son of a physician. In 1834 he entered the Art Academy in Dresden. After two years he went to Posen to work as a teacher. After that he travelled to Antwerp, Berlin and Munich to study. His "Kartenspieler in einer Gebirgsschenke" attracted attention and Paul Dröhmer engraved his works in Berlin. He returned to Dresden in 1840 where he was commissioned to paint a large alter piece for what is now the vcity of Augustusburg in Saxony. Further altarpieces followed. In 1857 he was appointed professor at the Art Academy in Dresden and he held this position until 1890. Between 1875 and 1877 he painted the ceiling in the upper vestibule of the south side of the Semperoper in Dresden. Gonne married Philippine Kaskel (05/03/1813-02/08/1889), the daughter of the banker Michel Kaskel (1775-1845). After his death in 1906 in Dresden he was buried in the Kaskel family tomb at the Trinitatis cemetery in Dresden. |
