Brigitte Mira grew up in Düsseldorf and after she was educated in singing and dancing she debuted in Cologne as "Esmeralda" in Smetana's "Die Verkaufte Braut". She held engagements in several other cities (among them Kiel and Graz) before Willi Schaeffers discovered her comical talents at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin and took her to his "Kabarett der Komiker".

During the fifties she was in many movies and during the sixties she turned to television. She played the main parts in several Fassbinder movies and continued her career until very old age.

She was married five times. Her last husband was the director Frank Guarente, who died in 1983. She was buried beside him after she died in 2005.
