Studied Law in Königsberg and joined the Prussian army as a volunteer in 1813. He fought at Grossbeeren, Dennewitz and Leipzig. After the war he worked for the general staff (1818-1840) and in 1845 he was promoted to the rank of major-general. He declined the post of Minister of War and became a member of the German parliament in Frankfurt am Main. After riots broke out in 1848, Auerswald and Prince Lichnowsky left the city to see if reinforcements were coming from Darmstadt, but along the way the mob recognized the hated Prince Lichnowsky and killed them both. |
