Pietro Annigoni studied at the College of the Piarist Fathers. He entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 1927. His teachers were Felice Carena, Giuseppe Graziosi and Celestino Celestini. In 1930 he first exhibited in Florence and in 1932 he had a solo exhibition at the Bellini Gallery. That year he also won the Trentacoste Prize. In 1937 he married Anna Giuseppa Maggini (d.1969).They had two children. Immediately after the war he was very successful and in 1947 he joined the Modern Realist Painters who opposed abstract painting. In 1949 his work was accepted by the Royal Academy in England. His international career took off and he exhibited many times in the United Kingdom and also in Paris and New York. In 1954 he made a portrait of the young queen Elizabeth II. He also portrayed John F. Kennedy (for TIME Magazine), Lyndon B. Johnson, Ludwig Erhard and Pope John XXIII. Apart from portraits he also painted church frescoes in the surroundings of Florence.
