The surname of Jane Stephens at the time of her birth is unknown. She married Joseph Stephens, who was a solicitor's clerk. She ran a tobacco shop before she entered the stage at the Olympic Theatre in 1840. From 1854 onwards she mainly played grandmothers and was known as Granny Stephens. Her last performance was during a benefit at the Shaftsbury Theatre in London on 9 July 1889. |
