Johann Gottlob Töpfer studied at the Wilhelm-Ernst gymnasium in Weimar from 1804 to 1808. From 1817 onwards he worked as a teacher in Weimar.

In 1830 he became the organist of the St. Peter und Paul church in Weimar. He held this position until his death in 1870, although he wanted to quit in 1844 because of bad working conditions. He was a virtuoso on the organ and the author of 400 compositions. He was an authority on organ building and wrote important theoretical works on this subject. His "Lehrbuch der Orgelbaukunst" was published in 1856.
