Son of the baker Friedrich Oldach. From 1821 to 1823 he attended the Academy of Arts in Dresden. He continued his studies under Peter von Cornelius in Munich. He mainly painted portraits of families and individual persons before he died in Munich, aged only 26. Alfred Lichtwark, the director of the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, wrote a monography about him. He was buried at the Alte Südfriedhof in Munich. There is also a cross for him at the Museum Heckengarten at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg.
