Landscape painter. He was the son of an inspector of schools. It was intended that Adrian would join the navy, but nothing came of that and he entered the schools of the Royal Academy. In 1876 he exhibited his first painting at the Academy. During the same year he moved to France, where he settled to study landscape painting. There he met the Austrian painter Marianne Preindlsberger and he married her in 1884. From 1885 to 1886 he studied under Dagnan-Bouveret in Paris. The Stokes settled in the artist colony at St Ives in Cornwall. His painting "Upland and Sky" was bought by the Tate Gallery. In 1909 he published a book on Hungary. In 1919 he became a full member of the Royal Academy. In 1927 Marianne died and in 1935 he died himself and was buried beside her at Mortlake Roman Catholic Cemetery in London.
