Botanist who mostly worked at the botanical gardens in Geneva. The current system for the classification of plants is based on a system developed by him. In 1808 he became a professor at Montpellier, where he reorganised the botanical garden. After the fall of Napoleon he returned to Geneva in 1816.

During the last 25 years of his life he worked on "Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis" in which he wanted to describe every seed plant species. He was able to complete seven volumes and after his death ten more volumes were published by his son Alphonse and his grandson Casimir.
