Otto Baisch was the son of the litographer Wilhelm Gottlieb Baisch (1805-1864). The painter Hermann Baisch (1846-1894) was his younger brother. In 1852 the family moved to Stuttgart. He studied with his father and at the Kunstschule Stuttgart (1860-1863) where Bernard von Neher and Heinrich Funk were his teachers.

After his father died in 1864 he took over his business. In 1873 he sold it an moved to Munich where he studied painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste under Alexander Wagner and Wilhelm Diez. His paintings were less successful than those of his brother Hermann, who lived in Munich as well.

In 1881 he moved to Berlin, where he became editor of the Täglichen Rundschau. In 1885 he became the editor of "Land und Meer" in Stuttgart. In July 1885 he married his second wife, the author Amalie Marggraff. They had a son, Hermann. In 1892 he died of pleurisy.
