Luca Beltrami sutided at the Politecnico in Milan and under Camillo Boito at the Brera Academy. He moved to Paris, where he stayed until 1880. In Paris he worked at the Trocadero and at the Palace of National Exhibitions. Together with the architect Théodore Ballu he worked on the Palace of Justice in Charleroi in Belgium.

After his return to Italy he worked in Milan where was mostly occupied with restoration works, among them the restoration of the Castello Sforzesco.
