Mária Gyurkovics worked as a secretary and at the same time she studied singing at the Music School in Székesfovár under György Jászó. From 1935 to 1937 she attended the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music where Imre Molnár was her teacher. On 25 May 1937 she debuted as Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto" at the Opera in Budapest. She was a leading soprano there for three decades and she performed in many cities in Europe. She performed work by Donizetti, Mozart, Rossini, Richard Strauss and many other composers. In 1967 she ended her career and after several years of illness she died in 1973 in Budapest. She was married to the conductor Miklós Forrai (1913-1998).
