Zoltán Ambrus was the son of a railroad official. He studied law in Budapest. After his father died when he was eighteen years old he had to support the family. He worked for a bank where László Arany encouraged him to pursue a literary career. He went to Paris in 1885 to study at the Collčge de France and the Sorbonne. After his return in Budapest he published short stories and he became the editor of Új Magyar Szemle in 1900. In 1906 he published his novel "Midás király". He made a living grom his writing until 1917. From 1917 to 1922 he was the director the National Theatre.
