Geraldine Jewsbury was the daughter of the cotton manufacturer Thomas Jewsbury (d.1840). Her mother was Maria, born Smith (d.1819). She was educated at boarding schools. From 1830 to 1831 she studied in London. In 1840 she wrote to Thomas Carlyle for advice avout a literary career. He invited her to his home, and she became a close friend of Carlyle's wife Jane, for whom she developed passionate feelings. In 1845 she published her first novel "Zoe: the History of Two Lives". In 1848 "The Half Sisters" followed and in 1851 "Marian Withers".

She authored further novels that were less successful. Between 1850 to 1859 she wrote seventeen stories for Charles Dickens' "Household Worlds". For "Athenaeum" she reviewed numerous books between 1846 and 1880. She never married but she had close friendships to men as well as women. Apart from Jane Carlyle she admired the actress Charlotte Cushman. She also befriended Sydney, Lady Morgan and assisted her in writing her memoirs. After Jane Carlyle died in 1866, she moved to Sevenoaks. In 1879 she was diagnosed with cancer, and she died in 1880 in a private hospital in London.
