Alfred Braun studied under Max Reinhardt in Berlin for the theatre, and he debuted at the Schillertheater. He started working for the radio in 1924 as a speaker for Funk-Stunde Berlin and he eventually became its director. In 1929 he provided live coverage of the funeral of Gustav Stresemann on 6 October, and he reported on Thomas Mann's Nobel Prize on 10 December 1929.

After the nazis came to power in 1933 the Gestapo arrested him because he had helped the 'Jewifiction of the Funkstunde'. He was taken to the concentration camp in Oranienburg for six weeks and then to the prison in Berlin-Moabit. With the help of Ferdinand Rieser, he was released, and he emigrated to Switzerland, where Rieser employed him at the Schauspielhaus in Zürich. From 1935 to 1937 he worked for the Stadttheater in Basel. After Joseph Goebbels rejected his application rehabilitation, he taught rhetoric in Ankara.

In 1939 he returned to Germany where he worked as a war correspondent and a screenwriter. In 1940 he was the assistant director of Veit Harlan's propaganda movie "Jud Süss". He wrote screenplays for further films by Harlan. In 1943 he relocated to Stuttgart, where he had bought a property. From 1945 to 14 he worked for the American forces. In 1947 he moved to East Berlin where he became a commentor on the communist radio and made propaganda against the USA.

From 1949 he successfully worked in West Berlin, where he directed Zarah Leader in "Ave Maria" in 1953. From 1957 to 1958 he was the director of the radio station Freies Berlin. He died in Berlin in 1978 and was buried at the Friedhof Heerstrasse in that city.
