George Tyrell Thorne was the son of Richard Samuel Thorne, the manager of the Surrey Theatre in London. His brother was the actor Thomas Thorne. He entered the stage as a child and from 1870 to 1873 he was engaged at his older sister Sarah Thorne's company. He worked in Calcutta in 1876. He joined a D'Oyly Carte touring company and toured in England after his return. In 1879 he appeared with Sarah Thorne in Boucicault's "The Flying Scud". In 1883 he married the actress Beatrice Thomas. In 1885 he went to New York where he played Ko-Ko in "The Mikado" by Gilbert and Sullivan. After his return to Great Britain in 1886, further tours followed. From 1890 to 1896 he was the principal comedian of the D'Oyly Opera Company and from 1896 to 1897 he appeared in South Africa. He wrote two comic opera's and adapted several novels by Charles Dickens for the stage. His memoir "Jots" was published in 1897. He died in 1922. Related persons is brother/sister of Thorne, Sarah |
