Ann Maria Bradshaw was born Ann Maria Tree. Her father Cornelius Tree worked for the East India House in London. She was an older sister of the actress Ellen Tree. She was trained as an actress at the Drury Lane Theatre. After a short engagement in Bath she was Rosina in "The Barber of Seville" at the Covent Garden Theatre in 1818. She also played Susannah in "The Marriage of Figaro" as a substitute for other actresses. In 1819 she was Princess Stella in a new play called "Gnome King". She was best known for various parts in plays by Shakespeare until she retired from the stage in 1825. She married James Bradshaw, a rich man who was MP for Canterbury. It was rumoured that she had attempted suicide before the marriage. They had a daughter, Harriet Maria. |
